Making smart choices are important – in all facets of life and especially when it comes to safety.  Choices can be to not get into tight situations, but also the choices about how to react when something does happen can be and are equally if not more important.   That theme was repeated through the day at each station during the annual Farm Safety College, Tuesday, September 18 at the Trowbridge Livestock Center on the University of Missouri campus.  Over 220 students, grades 7 through 10, attended this popular event.  FFA, 4-H, private and home school groups attended from Columbia, Franklin County, Hallsville, Kingdom Christian Academy, Mexico, Otterville, Pierce City, Potosi, South Callaway, Southern Boone and Wellsville-Middletown.

The day kicked off with a welcome from Paul Vaughn MU Associate Dean of Resident Instruction and Rod Geisert, Animal Science Division Unit Leader.  Diana Holland, Safety, Environmental and Regulatory Compliance Assistant for MFA Incorporated, Columbia then set the tone for the day and the reoccurring theme of ‘making smart choices’.  Students rotated through seven interactive stations and learned about avoiding perils and how to react when things go wrong.   Stations and presenters were:

Presenters for each of the stations:
ATV:  Donnie Golden, Crown Power, Columbia
Automotive:  Bruce McLaughlin, Missouri State Highway Patrol,
     Jefferson City
Electricity:  Keith Mueller, Electric Cooperatives of Central MO,
     Jefferson City
Firearms:  Jeff Cockerham, Missouri Department of Conservation,
     Columbia
First Aid:  Andrew Spain, University Hospital, Columbia
Large Animal Handling:  Les Green, Circle A Ranch, Huntsville
Lawn & Garden Equipment:  Greg Schad, Sydenstricker's of Missouri,         Mexico

All the participants received a commemorative t-shirt and hamburger lunch.  At the end of the day, students took a post-test and the highest scoring students received cash prizes.
