In the seven years of
the Southwest Missouri Cattlemen’s Classic Golf Tournament,
the day has brought unseasonably cold temperatures, strong
winds and torrential rains. But Thursday, September 20 was
a near perfect day for golf – sunshine, very light breeze
and mild temperatures. Twenty-nine teams took advantage of
the great day to come out and raise funds to enhance the
lives of Missouri youth. This outstanding event is hosted
each year by Joplin Stockyards at the beautiful Silo Ridge
Golf and Country Club in Bolivar.
A first-time team in
the tournament, Arvest Asset Management took first place in
the Championship Flight with a 55. Team members were Mike
Bennitt, Kevin Hermes, Greg Macchi, and Bert Kell. Second
in the top flight was the team of Trey Faucett, Mark Cobb,
Nate Dostel and Brian Jones. Rounding out the Championship
Flight was another team of first time entrants and Dallas
County Cattlemen: Ron Locke, Marvin Miller, Mickey McGuire
and Josh Ford.
A scorecard playoff
determined the placings in the A Flight with six teams
shooting a 62. First place went to Harold “Doc” Haskins,
Mike Connelley, Bynum Allenbaugh and Chris Byerly. Claiming
second was Scott Hertzka, Tom Kent, Bill Kent and Dave
Officer. Third place went to another new team, Matt
Morrison, Robert Crook, Greg White and Cathy Heckmaster with
Nowata Printing Company.
The team of Shelly
Owens, Sara Engler and Chad Schumann shot 64 for first place
in the B Flight. Steve Teagarden, Don Butzlaff, Terry
Calhoun and Keith Brown were close in second with a 65.
Followed by Bryon Haskins, Matt Miller, Curt Roland and
Larry Roland also with a 65 in third place.
In the C Flight it was
Troy Watson, Jim Hacker, Nick Flannigan and Clint Jones
scoring a 73 to take first place. Mark Harmon, Joe Brattin,
Randy Witt and Jerry Horton scored 74 for second place. In
third place was the team of Mike Smith, Jack Butterbaugh,
Gleason Dial and Jim Ray, also with a 74.
While no one claimed
the shiny new Avalanche or other prizes with a Hole-in One
on the designated holes, there were winners in several other
contests. Steve Owens won the Longest Putt; Greg Macchi had
the Longest Drive in the Fairway; Brett Magers with Great
Southern Bank had the Closest to the Pin; and Doc Haskins
had the Shortest Drive.
