The 5th annual Farm Safety
College was held at University of Missouri's Trowbridge
Livestock Center on Sep. 19. Students from around the area
gathered for a day full of fun outside of the classroom but
still learned something: farm safety.
The day began with a
discussion about making wise decisions led by Bruce Grotewiel,
an ambulance Paramedic with Boone Hospital Center of Columbia.
After the discussion, students were divided into groups and
proceeded into the seven different stations. After
completing all seven stations, students competed against each
other for the top score on the post-test. Cash prizes were
awarded to high scorers.
Stations available this
year were: ATVs, Automobiles, Fire, First Aid, Household
Hazardous Waste, Large Animal Handling and Lawn and Garden
Equipment. In these stations, students learned the
importance of knowing your equipment and performing a pre-ride
test, awareness of fire hazards in the home, how to properly
discharge a fire extinguisher and tips to properly handle large
animals with less stress for both the animal and the handler.
The Mizzou Collegiate
CattleWomen provided assistance before and during the event by
helping with registration, being group leaders, serving food as
well as setting up and tearing down.
